Why deny it?

St. Petersburg, Florida still makes a great place to retire.

This grand city by the bay of ours presents a more modern image of itself as the home to the Grand Prix, the Salvador Dali Museum, and the Tampa Bay Rays baseball franchise, but make no doubt, we still attract an awful lot of folks on the run from a lifetime of cold weather.

One of the reasons that men and women of a certain class of creative folks find their way here is the opportunity to work with the students and faculty of Eckerd College, a small liberal arts institution ensconced on a beautiful spit of prime waterfront land.

HERB SNITZER podcast excerpt: “I consider myself a documentary photographer. I also consider myself a visual historian.”

More than two decades ago, novelist James Michener (Centennial, Hawaii, The Source) made the campus his second home and enhanced the community by teaching and presenting seminars on his craft through the Academy of Senior Professionals.

One of the more recent professional creators to follow in Michener’s path is legendary magazine photographer Herb Snitzer.

Snitzer began his career in Manhattan in 1957 and his work appeared prominently over the years in all the magazines and newspapers that mattered during his era: Life, Look, The Saturday Evening Post, Fortune, Time, The New York Times and the Herald-Tribune. He also made his mark in the world of music, capturing enduring images of Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Count Basie.

More recently, and as a resident of the Tampa Bay area, his work as a civil rights activist has brought him new renown.

Eckerd College’s Cobb Gallery is featuring a retrospective of his work, “Herb Snitzer — A Life in Photography,” through April 5. Snitzer will be featured in a gallery talk on Monday, April 1 at 2 p.m. and will also appear at a closing reception on Friday, April 5.
