Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of Dr. Frederic Wertham fans – okay, just two prickly old broads who still think comic books are the root of all evil in America… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida!
For example, if you read the – God forbid – autobiography of Justin Beiber, would you imagine the Biebs reading it to you?
Well, ever since my first interview with novelist Max Allan Collins, I can’t help but read his detective stories and hear his voice unraveling the narrative and dialogue.
MAX ALLAN COLLINS audio excerpt: “Complex 90 has a hugely violent scene where Mike Hammer essentially slaughters 45 people. I’m glad it won’t be coming out till May because maybe things will settle down and I won’t have to answer the questions about, ‘How can you put a hero in that position?’ I’m just naive enough to think there is a difference between a lunatic in real life going into a school and killing innocent children, and a fictional character who is a hero killing a bunch of villains in a novel. It’s a specious argument. And it’s an easy one.”
You can LISTEN to this interview with detective fiction novelist MAX ALLAN COLLINS, author of SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT and COMPLEX 90 with Mickey Spillane, by clicking the audio player above!
That was particularly true in Seduction of the Innocent, a wacky twisting of realish people and false situations that anyone with a sense of comic book history will enjoy if for no other reason than to see creepy Dr. Werner Frederick get knocked off. It’s a roller-coaster ride of four-color goodness.
And in reading his other new book, the Mike Hammer story Complex 90, I swear I hear Max in the narrative and his posthumous co-author Mickey Spillane in the conversations between Hammer and everybody.
Is it just me?
